CPA Teaching Method
At Cosmo, we embrace the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (or CPA) teaching method, which is highly effective in helping students grasp mathematical concepts deeply and intuitively. We apply this method in Cosmo Lessons and encourage you to follow it. This method helps students make connections by gradually moving from tangible experiences to abstract thinking. Here’s how it works:
1. Concrete: Begin with real-world objects. For example, when teaching multiplication, use physical items like toys or counters to demonstrate the concept. (e.g., 3 groups of 4 sheep).
2. Pictorial: Next, transition to visual representations, such as drawings or diagrams, that illustrate the concept (e.g., drawing the groups of sheep).
3. Abstract: Finally, introduce mathematical symbols and equations (e.g., 3×4=12). This stage helps students apply their understanding symbolically.By following the CPA method, students not only learn mathematical concepts but also build critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This approach makes complex ideas more approachable, ensuring a deeper understanding that lasts.
